What To Do If You're Locked Out Of Your Home: A Comprehensive Guide

Being locked out of your home can be an exasperating and trying experience. Whether it's due to lost or misplaced keys, or simply leaving them inside, being unable to regain entry to your home can interrupt your day's plans and leave you feeling powerless. However, there are a few steps you can take to regain entry to your home. With a little bit of know-how and preparation, you can be back inside your home and on with your day in no time.

In this article, we will be exploring the various methods you can use to regain entry to your home, including checking for spare keys, inspecting doors and windows, attempting lock picking, calling in a professional locksmith, and as a last resort, breaking a window or forcing your way in which we don’t recommend unless there are no other options.

By following these steps, you will be able to regain entry to your home with ease and confidence, no matter what situation you may find yourself in.

If you are locked out in an emergency situation where your life is in danger, you should call the relevant emergency services.

  1. Check for spare keys:

    • Check outside your home for any hidden spare keys you may have left there.

    • If you have trusted a neighbor, family member, or friend with a spare key, reach out to them to see if they still have it.

    • Try using the spare key to see if it unlocks the door.

  2. Inspect all doors and windows:

    • Look at all doors and windows to see if any of them are unlocked or ajar.

    • If you have alternative entrances, such as a basement window or a door leading to your garage, consider trying to use them to gain entry.

  3. Attempt lock picking:

    • Only attempt lock picking if you have prior experience or are willing to learn from online tutorials and resources.

    • Be mindful that attempting to pick a lock without the proper knowledge, tools, and skills can cause harm to the lock and make your situation more complicated.

  4. Call in a professional locksmith:

    • Hiring a professional locksmith is a great option if you don't feel comfortable attempting to pick the lock yourself or if no other options are available.

    • A locksmith will have the right tools and expertise to unlock your door without causing damage, and often in a timely manner.

    • Make sure to have something that can be used to verify your home ownership. This could be something like your driver’s license with the proper address, a recent utility bill, or some other proof of ownership.

    • Use the internet, phonebook, or reach out to local hardware stores, friends, family, or local social media groups for locksmith recommendations.

    • Compare prices to find the most affordable locksmith option for your situation.

  5. Last resort measures:

    • Breaking a window or forcing your way in through a door should always be a last resort, WE DO NOT RECOMMEND this option unless it is absolutely necessary. It is easy to hurt yourself attempting to force your way back inside through brute strength, and generally, a locksmith will be more affordable than paying for repairs.

    • Most locksmith companies have a response time of less than an hour and are typically cheaper than breaking and replacing a window or kicking down a door, however, the pricing of all companies will vary.

    • If you do have to resort to these measures, exercise caution and be aware of any potential dangers, such as shattered glass or splintered wood, especially if you have pets like dogs or cats.

Before we delve into a more in-depth walkthrough, where we talk about the different methods of regaining entry into the home, let's first assess the current situation and determine what options are available.

First off, is there an accessible spare key around? Maybe one that was left with a friend, neighbor, family member, or hidden outside the house? If so, that may be a good starting point.

In the event that there are no spare keys, the next step might be to check all the doors and windows to see if any of them are unlocked. It's possible that one may be unlocked and provide access, in which case, it should be relatively simple to get back inside.

Assuming that the first two steps were unsuccessful, and everything’s locked up tight with no way of entry, it might be possible to try lock picking. Now, this is a bit advanced and should only be attempted if you have prior experience, the tools, and/or are willing to learn. There are plenty of resources available online that can teach you the ins and outs of lock picking. However, it’s important to keep in mind that trying to pick a lock without the proper knowledge could end up causing more harm to the lock, making the situation worse.

With no way of regaining entry yourself short of causing damage, it might be time to check on a locksmith service. If you don't have a locksmith's phone number readily available, we recommend using the internet to search for locksmiths in your area. Alternatively, you can try reaching out to a local hardware store, family, friends, or local social media groups for locksmith company recommendations. Keep in mind that locksmith services can be costly, so it's best to compare prices and find the most affordable option for your situation. It can also generally be said that a locksmith service is usually more affordable than breaking and repairing a window, but obviously, every situation will be different. If you're lucky enough to have alternative entrances to your home, such as a basement window or a door leading to your garage, you may be able to gain entry through these routes. If you have access to these areas, try using them to get back into your home.

Many locksmith companies have response times of under an hour from the time you call. When you’re locked out and call a locksmith company, they will send someone to your location to open your door. Most of the time a locksmith technician can pick the lock open, or “jimmy it” if the lock in question is a knob or lever, without causing damage. If the lock is picked open, it will still function normally, meaning if the key was left inside it will still work. It’s rare that a good locksmith won’t be able to pick a lock, but a good locksmith will only drill the lock if required, and no damage will be done to the door or the door frame. In the rare event that the lock does need to be drilled open, the locksmith company will be able to replace it with the same one or a better one, and possibly rekey it to match your existing home keys if desired.

We never recommend forcing your way in as it will cause unnecessary damage and most likely end up costing more in repairs than hiring a locksmith service. Forcing your way in through a door or window should always be a last resort that we don’t recommend. It’s very easy to hurt yourself trying to force your way back inside, and it will cause damage to your home that will need to be fixed. If you do decide to break a window or force your way in, exercise caution and be aware of any potential dangers, such as shattered glass or splintered wood, especially if you have pets like cats or dogs.

In conclusion, being locked out of your abode can be a nerve-wracking and annoying experience, but hopefully, this guide has helped point you in the right direction. By following a few simple steps, you can regain entry to your dwelling and be back inside in no time. Whether you opt for searching for a spare key, examining all doors and windows, attempting lock picking, contacting a professional locksmith, or using alternative access points, the most vital thing is to remain composed and take your time so long that you are in a safe environment. With a bit of patience and the proper approach, you can overcome this hindrance and get back to your daily routine. So, don't let panic set in, take a deep breath, and find the solution that suits you best.

Top 5 Ways to Secure Your Residential Homes Front Door

While there are many different reasons one may want to increase the security of their home, the front door is an important access point that shouldn’t be overlooked from a security standpoint. In this article, we will be going over some of our top picks for ways to secure your residential home from potential intruders and burglars.

It’s worth noting that no matter the level of security one might install; if someone has enough motivation and time to get inside, they probably will. Like the old saying goes “locks only keep honest people out”. These tips are to not only help secure a front home door for a longer period of time against someone on foot but they are also intended to provide deterrents to potential home intruders such as burglars.

It is also worth noting that currently in the United States, in 2020 alone, 60.5% of all crimes could be categorized as “crime against property” — FBI 2020 Incident Data

In 2010 there were 1,939,324 burglary offenses, while last year in 2020 there were only 903,627 — Crime Data Explorer.

This shows a steep decline in burglary offenses, which we believe is most likely attributed to an increase in security cameras, alarm systems, and other preventative measures.

Larceny-theft accounted for 73.4 percent of all property crimes in 2019. Burglary accounted for 16.1 percent, and motor vehicle theft for 10.4 percent. Property crimes in 2019 resulted in losses estimated at $15.8 billion — FBI

1. Use A High Quality & Secure Deadbolt

Using a good deadbolt lock is important for a majority of reasons, but it essentially boils down to “you get what you pay for”. A cheap $10 deadbolt lock is very easy to pick or drill into in most cases when compared to a high-security lock. Some of the most secure locks, in our opinion, are locks from Mul-T-Lock. High-quality deadbolts are generally built better, and from better materials, so they can withstand more abuse, and for longer, against forced entry attempts.

It’s important to note that better locks do provide better security, but also at an elevated price compared to traditional locking deadbolts. When it comes to the security of your home, or your front door in particular, a good deadbolt is arguably one of the most important things that someone could do to improve their security.

2. Use Additional Locks & Latches (One-Sided Deadbolts)

Many homeowners may find that they only have one lock on their front door, and we think that’s not very safe. We are of the belief that every home door leading from the inside to the out be fitted with 3 different locks. This includes a secure deadbolt lock, a locking doorknob or lever, and a single-sided deadbolt. A single-sided deadbolt is a lock that can be flipped to locked or unlocked from inside the home but has no keyhole on the outside. Single-sided deadbolts are useful when someone is inside the home and wants to make sure no one else can get inside, such as during the nighttime. With a single-sided deadbolt installed, a burglar could unlock both the deadbolt and the doorknob, but still be unable to gain entry due to the inaccessible (to them) single-sided deadbolt. The only way to get into a single-sided deadbolt is through forced entry, which generally involves lots of noise like drilling or prying.

Besides installing a single-sided deadbolt, we also recommend making sure that your doorknob or lever lock works properly and latches correctly in the door frame. It is true that doorknobs and lever locks are generally less secure than their deadbolt counterparts due to the way the latch is shaped and operates, but they can still add an additional layer of security for a home intruder to get through.

3. Use A Security Bar (Door Brace)

A security bar is a device that is propped up against the door and acts as a last-ditch backup to prevent entry. Security bars, at this point in time, are not yet wireless, so homeowners are only able to use them when they are home. Security bars are great, however, at preventing a door from being opened, even if the door is completely unlocked. In addition to security bars, there are many different types of latches that can be installed on the inside of the door, such as security latches that one might find in a hotel room.

Security bars are relatively inexpensive and they can really make a difference. In the event that a home intruder is able to pick open your home locks quietly, they would be unable to open the door due to the security bar. Trying to force open a door with a security bar would result in noise, giving the homeowner enough time to flee, call for help, or provide them with enough time to stand their ground.

4. Add Deterrents (Alarms, Video Doorbells, Security Cameras, Dogs, Motion Floodlights, etc)

Besides just reinforcing the door itself, there are also many different ways to prevent burglars from seeing your home as a target in the first place. Adding deterrents is just as important as the actual security of your home itself.

By subcategory, 55.7 percent of burglaries involved forcible entry, 37.8 percent were unlawful entries, and 6.5 percent were attempted forcible entry (...) Burglaries of residential properties accounted for 62.8 percent of all burglary offensesFBI

One of the best ways to deter forced entry attempts is to make your home seem like more trouble than it’s worth. This is why it’s important to add things like motion detecting floodlights, video doorbells, and other types of security systems.

According to interviewed burglars, some of the best ways to deter them is with a large breed of dog, or if they think you’re home. Most burglars will attempt to knock first to check if someone is home, and most will have backup stories in case someone is home (looking for my dog, sorry wrong house, etc).

KTVB asked 86 different burglars about what their biggest deterrents were and what didn’t bother them, the article can be found here.

5. Get A Strong Door & Reinforced Frame

It’s important not to neglect the strength of the actual door itself as well as the frame that the latches go into. Even if a door is fully equipped with some of the best locks on the market, the security of the entryway is only as strong as the weakest component. This means that strong locks won’t help much if the door itself is flimsy or insecure. From a security standpoint, it’s much better to have a thick wooden door, or even a metal door, versus a cheaper variant that’s filled with foam. Additionally, since the bolt latch will be going into the door frame, it’s important to ensure that the frame is reinforced properly, as to not give way in the event of a forced entry attempt.

Besides replacing the door itself with a strong one, another helpful tip is to use larger screws to secure the latches to the door as well as to secure the metal pieces that the bolts rest inside of, on the frame itself. When attempting to kick open a locked door, all the pressure will transfer to the latches in the frame, therefore, it’s important to have latches and the frame reinforced. Besides using larger screws, or getting a stronger door, it’s possible to reinforce the frame itself with an additional piece of wood or metal.

Best Ways To Secure Your Home’s Front Door

To summarize some of the best ways to secure your home’s front door, we suggest adding deterrents to keep criminals away, using strong locks, backup locks, and a reinforced door frame with a strong door. Deterrents are excellent at keeping criminals away in the first place, especially if they see your home as too much of a challenge. In addition to keeping criminals away, having strong security measures for your front door is ideal for not only keeping you safe, but also your property. Having security cameras is also good because it can record break-ins, or break-in attempts, which can be important for insurance claims and also when filing a police report.

Deadbolts VS Doorknobs — What's The Difference?

In this article, we are going to go over the differences between a deadbolt and a doorknob lock. First, we will cover definitions of both, then we will cover some of the pros and cons of each. We will also go over information about door levers, and how they’re different but similar to doorknobs and deadbolts.

What is a deadbolt?

A deadbolt lock, or dead bolt (deadlock), is a lock that is operated with a key and comprised of a “square” shaped latch (we cover latches later). Deadbolts often offer superior levels of protection over their doorknob and lever counterparts of equal security rating. Deadbolt locks are separate from doorknob locks, and often come in either single cylinder or double cylinder variants. Single-cylinder deadbolts have a lock on the outside of the door with a keyhole for operation, and a flip turn on the inside for locking and unlocking. Double-sided deadbolts are actually two separate locks, but they are often installed on businesses and homes where locks are near windows. Double-sided deadbolts are different than single cylinder deadbolts because instead of being able to be locked or unlocked from the inside with a thumb-turn device, they must be operated with keys from either side.

Many think that double-sided deadbolts are just one lock, but it’s actually two separate locks that are fitted on both the inside and the outside, instead of a flip turn on the inside. This is the reason double-sided deadbolts cost more than single-sided deadbolts, because there are actually two separate lock cylinders instead of just one.

Double-sided deadbolts often pose fire-related concerns for those who are seeking to exit a burning building but can’t because they don’t have keys to unlock the door from the inside-out. Double-sided deadbolts are used frequently on business doors and home front doors near a glass entry, as burglars often break a window and reach inside to unlock a lock. With double-sided deadbolts, intruders can’t operate locks if they reach inside, even if they get their hand through a broken window. That’s because there isn’t a flip turn they can use, instead, they are greeted by the same lock as is on the outside.

Most homeowners and businesses will be relying on a deadbolt lock to keep them secure from intruders. Homes that have only a doorknob or door lever lock on an entry door are encouraged to contact their nearest locksmith and install a new deadbolt lock to enhance the security of the door. Doors that have deadbolt locks are much harder to kick in as the bolt goes much further into the frame when compared to a lever lock or doorknob lock.

Below are just a few pros and cons of deadbolt locks.

Pros:

  • Offers the best levels of security for brute force physical attacks

  • Can’t be “Jimmied” open

Cons:

  • Can become hard to use if a house shifts/settles over time

  • Double-sided deadbolts can be a fire hazard

  • Double-sided deadbolts are actually two locks & lock rekeying will require both cylinders be rekeyed to work with the same key

What is a doorknob?

Doorknobs and door levers are very similar, the key difference being their shapes. To put it into perspective, both pieces of hardware are for the purpose of operating the door latch.

Wikipedia defines a latch as:

a type of mechanical fastener that joins two (or more) objects or surfaces while allowing for their regular separation

A doorknob is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as a knob that releases a door latch. Cambridge defines it as a round handle that you turn to open a door. Doorknobs are essentially the handle parts of the door, but when they’re shaped like a knob as opposed to a lever. In a majority of homes in the United States, most doors will consist of either a doorknob or a door lever lock. Doorknobs, lever locks, and deadbolts are all separate pieces of hardware that provide varying levels of protection and have their own pros and cons. Doorknobs are more-or-less the same as door levers, the primary difference being their shapes.

Pros:

  • Usually more affordable than lever locks

  • More Childproof than lever locks

  • Dog-proof unlike lever locks

  • Hurts less to get snagged on versus a lever lock

Cons:

  • Can be hard to grip for children and people with arthritis

  • Could be a fire hazard to someone who can’t twist the knob

  • Some models could be trickier to access the lock cylinder for a rekey versus a lever lock

What is a door lever?

A door lever is more or less the same as a doorknob, however, the difference is that a lever is used for operation instead of a knob. This means that one can push down on the horizontal lever, versus twisting a knob like a doorknob. Door levers are often preferred for homeowners and businesses for their ease of use, especially with children and the elderly, and in commercial business bathrooms. Some states require businesses to equip their doors with lever locks as opposed to doorknob locks in order to be as user-friendly as possible for disabled individuals and the elderly with trouble operating locks, such as arthritis. Door levers are great for businesses and homes alike, and most lock brands will offer doorknobs and door levers in similar styles and colors.

Pros:

  • Looks nicer than doorknob variants

  • Can be just as strong as doorknob locks

  • Many lever locks are also electronic keypad lever locks

Cons:

  • Can hurt to walk into as the lever is pointy and hip level

  • Some animals can manipulate the lever and open the door (big dogs mostly)

  • Electronic door lever locks can be costly

Which One Is Better?

deadbolt-vs-doorknobs-whats-the-difference.jpg

When it comes to offering the highest level of security against physical attacks like a kick-in attack, deadbolt locks are typically the way to go. Deadbolt latches typically extend further into the door-frame than a knob or lever latch, which is what makes them stronger to blunt force. We always recommend to homeowners who only have one existing doorknob or lever lock on an entry door that they install a new deadbolt lock. Installing a new deadbolt lock onto an existing door is pretty straightforward and can be handled by your local locksmith service.

Additionally, fully functional deadbolt latches that are locked can’t be “jimmied” open like many knob or lever latches. If you’ve ever heard of the credit card trick, where people can use their credit cards to open their doors latch, this is an example of jimmying. Most doors that are framed tightly will prevent this from being possible, on the other hand, newer doorknob/lever latches are starting to have security bars which makes it much harder, if not impossible, to manipulate them. The only reason jimmying open a doorknob lock is possible and not a deadbolt is because the latch-bit is slightly angled, allowing something to fit between it and the door. The latch must be angled slightly, however, or the doorknob/lever wouldn’t work as it’s intended. One side must be angled to ensure that the door can close properly when it hits the frame and the other side must be square so that it “catches” in the frame.

Deadbolt lock cylinders are held together much more tightly and are more secure, as they are generally held in place with thicker screws, tightened directly from the inside of the property. On the other hand, doorknob locks and lever locks have the lock cylinder on the outside of the door and the cylinder is not directly held in place with screws most of the time. The differences this can make are quite large. It’s much harder to hammer a deadbolt lock off a door if it is tightly screwed in, with thicker and longer screws, versus a doorknob or lever lock that has skinnier screws. In regards to lock picking, most deadbolts and knobs/levers of the same security rating are equally difficult when it comes to opening. The most physical protection comes from the deadbolt because of its shape and angle which helps to deflect blows, unlike knob variants which are meant for ease of operation to the user, allowing them in and out of a door.

In our opinion, for those who are considering the question of doorknobs VS lever locks, we can’t give a specific recommendation as it all comes down to personal preference. Alternatively, for those who are considering a deadbolt vs doorknob or lever lock, we recommend spending the most on a secure deadbolt lock as that’s what provides the most security to the door. Extremely expensive electronic doorknobs and lever locks can be nice for ease of use, such as in the case of smart locks, but they are still physically weaker in most cases when it comes to a kick-in attack. Many burglars might not know this, however, so having both of your locks electronic might be a good idea to deter them. Many burglars are opportunistic and many are down on their luck and desperate, if you show that your property is well protected, it will help to serve as a good deterrent from being burglarized.

Deadbolt Latches VS Doorknob & Lever Latches

The biggest difference between a deadbolt lock and a doorknob lock is that they have different latches, which offer varying levels of protection. Doorknob and lever latches are meant to allow the user to open and close the door easily, while a deadbolt latch is meant to secure the door even more. The shape of the latches makes a big difference when it comes to determining which lock latch is which, as deadbolt locks are square-ish in shape while doorknob and lever lock latches are slightly angled. The angle and slant of a doorknob or lever lock latch are important because it allows the door to shut properly and stay closed until it’s operated again.

Top 5 Kwikset Electronic Locks in 2021

In this article, we will be going over our top 5 picks for electronic Kwikset locks.

Generally, there are two different types of lock hardware on a standard residential entry door: a deadbolt lock and a door handle. A deadbolt provides the most security, while the handle is used for opening the door and making sure it “catches” in the frame and stays shut. Most residential lock handles in the USA are doorknobs or door levers. Learn more about deadbolts, doorknobs, and door levers on Wikipedia.

When it comes to selecting an electronic Kwikset lock, there are definitely quite a few to choose from, and all with varying colors and trim options.

In this article, we will be using the same naming system as it appears on Kwikset’s website in the electronic lock section. Kwikset makes 2 different types of electronic locks, a “keyless entry lock” variant, and a “smart lock” variant. The only difference between the two is that a smart lock is WiFi-enabled, allowing it internet access and therefore the ability to connect to mobile devices. The keyless entry variant might be confusing to some as these electronic locks actually DO have keyholes for emergency backup use— as do the smart locks. Both the keyless entry locks and the smart locks have options for keypads and other entry options besides using a key.

This next section will cover our top 5 picks for the best electronic Kwikset locks 2021, and the bottom of our article will cover frequently asked questions and some of the many different benefits of using electronic locks.

Top 5 Ways To Secure Sliding Glass Doors from Burglars

Top 5 Ways to Secure Sliding Glass Door From Burglars

secure-sliding-glass-door-recommendations.jpg

Nowadays it can be said that most modern residential homes have a sliding glass door that provides either access to a patio, a backyard, or a side area. many consider sliding glass doors to be a weak point when it comes to forced entry from a burglar or home invader however in this guide we will be going over some of our top five ways to secure sliding glass doors. It's important not to neglect the security of a sliding glass door as home security is only as good as its weakest link, which in some cases, is certainly a sliding glass door.

Our top five ways to secure sliding glass doors from burglars include: applying a shatterproof film to the glass. Adding blocking bars into the track of the glass door. Adding window locks in addition to locking bars to help mitigate the door from being opened. Surrounding the door with an alarm system that is visible to a potential intruder. And finally, ensuring that the sliding glass door itself has a strong lock with a latch that is powerful enough to withstand someone pulling on it.

It's important to always keep a sliding glass door properly maintained and to regularly do checks to make sure they are working correctly.

1. Shatterproof Film

When it comes to our customers asking us how they can improve the security of their sliding glass door from break in attacks, our go-to answer is generally applying a shatterproof film to the glass and a blocking bar if necessary. Applying shatterproof film is generally a cost-effective solution that can be either transparent or tinted to help with the Sun, and it will ensure that the glass is harder to break. applying a shatterproof film to a sliding glass door might be a good idea if living in an area with frequent hurricanes as it could also help with that.

Besides using shatterproof film, many companies also sell impact-resistant sliding glass doors which can achieve the same result. Some companies sell hurricane proof sliding glass doors that can withstand bricks and other hard objects being hurled at them at very fast speeds. Shatterproof film is generally regarded as the more cost-effective solution out of the two.

top-ways-to-secure-sliding-glass-doors-from-burglars.jpg

2. Blocking Bars

Blocking bars are generally placed in the tracks of a sliding glass door to prohibit the glass door from opening, as the blocking bar will not allow the door to be opened. Blocking bars are generally just straight pieces of metal or wood. Many companies will sell blocking bars online, however, we generally suggest that customers go to a dollar store for a cheap wooden broom and cut the handle to fit the perfect size of their sliding glass door. This may be the most cost-effective solution but metal will always be stronger than wood against a brute force attack.

3. Window Locks or Security Pins

Window locks are sometimes able to be used on sliding glass doors and they can add extra layers of security. Window locks and other sliding patio door locks can be screwed onto the frame or track to prohibit the door from opening, similar to a blocking bar. Security pins can be added also. With a security pin, a homeowner will drill a hole through the bottom right interior corner of the sliding door and partially into the frame, big enough for a metal pin to fit into. A security pin is a hardened steel pin that can be placed into the hole and will hold the two doors together.

4. Alarm System & Glass Break Detector

A good way to secure sliding glass doors from a break-in attempt will be to surround the outside of the door with alarm system notifications. It has been proven that burglars are less likely to invade a residence if there is a presence of an alarm system. In addition to an alarm system for the sliding glass door, it's also highly recommended to add a glass break detector on the glass. This is generally a simple and cost-effective solution that, when done correctly, will trigger a loud alarm as soon as the sliding glass door’s glass is broken.

Nowadays it's very possible to get do-it-yourself alarm kits which are pretty affordable. While an alarm system might not do anything to physically secure the door, it has been indicated by the F. B. I. that burglars are 2.7 times more likely to target homes without alarm systems. Many products are on the market that don't have subscription fees or installation costs besides purchasing of the original unit itself. An alarm system works well with a motion-triggered floodlight covering the outside of the sliding glass door. Many alarm systems today can be synced with the homeowners smartphone, allowing instant messages and alerts. Read about 8 more surprising home burglary facts on Safewise.

5. Strong Locks

how-to-secure-home-sliding-glass-door.jpg

It's important not to neglect the locks themselves that are placed on the sliding glass doors and ensure that the latches are secure and strong enough to withstand a forced entry attempt such as a criminal with a crowbar. Sliding glass doors are often considered so vulnerable because of how simple it would be to throw a brick through a window or to force the door open. There are many different types of sliding glass door locks that can be found online and at common home department stores, and it may be a good investment if the security of a sliding door is in question.

Summary

We feel that it is also important to mention that protecting the perimeter of the sliding glass door is also important, as well as protecting the actual glass door itself. This means that a sliding glass door that is facing a public alley is more likely to get burglarized than a sliding glass door which is fully equipped with all of the options above, and securely located in a backyard which has strong surrounding walls and extra security attributes such as a guard dog.

It may also be a good idea to consider keeping blinds closed and/or curtains covering sliding glass doors when necessary, like around night time. Maybe consider placing a motion sensor outside on the porch or around the sliding glass door, additionally, motion-detecting floodlights are good preventives for scaring off Intruders. Those who are on a budget might consider installing dummy security cameras around the sliding glass door as it can also help scare off potential intruders.

When Is It Time To Replace Home Locks — Repairing Or Upgrading Locks

locksmith-near-me-north-colorado-lockout-services.jpg

A common question that many individuals have is deciding on the right time to replace their home locks. Many people will find themselves asking the question; should I replace my home locks or should I repair them? Typically a good indicator of when a lock needs to be replaced is when it is no longer functioning as it should. Sometimes the best solution might be for a repair, and in other cases, the best option is a replacement. In this article, we are going to go over some of our thoughts on when the ideal time to replace a lock is instead of opting for a lock repair service.

Before covering our primary topic, it’s important to point out that replacing a lock is different than repairing it. If a lock is working as it should but only different keys are required, a lock rekeying service is generally the best option. Learn more about lock rekeying here to find out more about the differences between rekeying a lock and replacing it entirely. It is important to note that when a lock is rekeyed it retains the same functionality as before it was rekeyed, meaning a lock that is no longer functional will not be functional after it is rekeyed to a different key. Learn more about Lock Changing VS Rekeying.

To Repair or Replace?

The primary advantage of replacing a lock over repairing it is the fact that entirely new hardware will be placed on the door. When a lock is repaired, however, the same hardware stays on the door and the broken piece in question will be changed out with a newer piece. Typically many homeowners will find that replacing a lock entirely is their best choice over repairing a broken piece as replacing everything is generally the most cost-effective solution long-term. What we mean by this, is that a lock that is in not so great condition might continue to break despite the repairs that have been done.

To go into more detail, when a lock is no longer locking correctly due to a malfunctioning latch, one option might be to replace the broken latch in question with a new one, leaving the same interior and exterior pieces on the door. This might be a good solution for some, however, others might choose to replace everything entirely. It is estimated that the average home lock will last approximately 7 years however this approximation varies based on statistics such as usage, wear and tear, weather conditions, and other various factors.

Locks that are no longer functioning as they should due to old age could be repaired and still have a few years left of life. Locks that have been through a break-in however are probably best replaced with different and newer locks, especially if forced entry was involved. If locks are not turning easily it might be time to consider that they either need to be replaced or repaired. A lock that is not turning easily might be a good indication that some sort of impairment is happening. when a lock is not functioning as it should, or when it becomes hard to unlock a door lock it with a key, it might be time to start thinking about the possibility that it may malfunction and/or break soon.

Other things to consider when thinking about whether to repair or replace a lock might be if there's difficulty turning the key, if the key gets stuck frequently, and if there are frozen parts or internal mechanisms that aren’t moving as they should. It's possible that over time parts from within the lock might begin to freeze up and not move correctly. This could be for many reasons in the solution might be to either replace the part that is frozen or is broken, or to replace the lock entirely which will also replace the broken part in question. If a key gets frequently stuck it might be time to put some lubricant into the lock or consider a repair service before a key breaks in the lock resulting in a lockout and a broken key.

We always consider replacing locks with new ones after a break-in has occurred as well as when a lock is clearly damaged beyond repair. Burglars might destroy a lock in an attempt to break in, typically with a crowbar or other forceful instrument or tool. Additionally, homeowners will want to consider replacing their lock entirely if it starts to become very hard to use or rusted due to extreme elements, or inclement weather.

Replacing Home Locks

It's generally not as hard as one might think to replace home locks such as doorknobs are deadbolts. In fact, many hardware stores carry common brands of locks. Hardware stores such as Lowe's, Ace Hardware, and The Home Depot are great examples of hardware stores that are found around the USA that keep locksets in stock. Many homeowners find that they can replace their home locks themselves simply with a Phillips head screwdriver, but when dealing with many locks that are working correctly, a locksmith might be the cheapest option for having all of the locks be on different keys.

A common reason that homeowners change their locks is that they want a different style or finish; an example of this might be after a remodel when everything is painted and the homeowner wants a different doorknob and deadbolt of a different color. Additionally, homeowners might want to replace their older mechanical deadbolt with a newer electronic deadbolt such as a keypad lock. Many homeowners are now finding that smart locks are the ideal solution for them as many smart locks can sync with their smartphone in order to unlock and lock based on their proximity from the lock itself. Another common reason that people are opting to replace their locks is for mobility reasons, an example of this might be replacing a doorknob with a door leaver. Some people choose door levers over doorknobs because it's easier to push down on a lever than it is to turn a lock, especially for those who have issues such as arthritis or trouble with their hands or fingers.

While many locks nowadays can be installed easily with only a screwdriver, many still find that a professional Locksmith service is the best choice for them. A mobile locksmith service can arrive at the homeowners location, generally on the same day, in order to install the locks for them. This is good for those who are unsure of exactly what to do in regards to replacing their lock with a different one.

Another good example of why people might replace their locks is to have all of their locks be on the same key. What we mean by this is homeowners might change existing locks so that they are all on the same keyway. Locks such as Schlage and Kwikset have proprietary keyways meaning that a Kwikset key will not fit in a Schlage lock and a Schlage key will not fit in a Kwikset lock. Homeowners that have predominantly Kwikset locks might choose to replace one of their Schlage locks with a Kwikset one in order to have all of their home locks be on the same key or the other way around.

Summary

There are many key differences between replacing a lock entirely and repairing an existing one. Homeowners might choose to repair an existing lock that is newer and has a specific issue that can easily be fixed with a new part and homeowners with older locks are generally encouraged to replace their entire lockset with a new one to mitigate future issues down the road. It can generally be said that replacing a lock entirely will be a little more costly than just fixing the part in question, however, new lock sets are sometimes the best option for locks that are too far gone to be repaired efficiently and cost-effectively.

It's always important that you as a homeowner decide what is right for your home.

5 Tips For Choosing Locks For Your Rental Properties

fort-collins-colorado-mobile-locksmiths.jpg

Congratulations on becoming a landlord! Buying an investment property is a huge financial and emotional undertaking. If you have done everything right, you are now on your way to earning passive income for many years to come.

That said, owning an investment property comes with a ton of responsibilities. And, among that list of responsibilities is ensuring you provide your tenant with a safe property. This is important as about 2.5 million burglaries are committed annually here in the U.S (there’s one every 13 seconds).

Now, in any home, door locks are an important security system. They basically ensure that the home is only accessible to the rightful residents and not strangers. When looking to buy door locks, there are a couple of things worth considering. In this post we’ll be going over 5 tried-and-tested tips to help you choose the right locks for your rental properties. But first…

What are the Different Types of Door Locks?

Door locks come in many different types and vary in the level of security they provide. So, before choosing one for your rental property, make sure to understand what your needs are first. Below are some of the most common types of door locks.

  • Deadbolt Locks: These are usually made from brass, steel, and other metal. They are heavier and thicker than your standard spring latch. Deadbolt locks can typically be operated with a key or through an electronic system that can move the bolt. Most deadbolt locks are used as anti-burglary defenses in residential homes. Common types of deadbolts include single- and double cylinder deadbolts.

  • Mortise Locks: Mortise locks are typically made from stainless steel, solid brass, and other metals. Because of their strength and reliability, mortise locks are widely used in commercial spaces. It is basically a lock that requires a pocket to be cut into a piece of furniture or the door into which the lock is to be fitted. Read more about mortise locks on Wikipedia.

  • Knob Locks: Knob locks are generally made from high-quality stainless steel and other types of metals. They are the most common type of door lock alongside lever locks. They are commonly installed in residential homes on exterior doors in addition to deadbolts. Although they are common kinds of locks, they are not recommended as a home’s first line of defense. Knob locks and lever locks are not recommended to be used alone without also being used with at least a deadbolt lock.

  • Cam Locks: Cam locks are usually made from chrome finish die-cast zinc alloy and other metals. They are a robust, cylindrical locking mechanism used in many industrial applications. They are especially popular for use with locking drawers, cabinets, desks, mailboxes, and lockers.

  • Padlocks: The shackle of most padlocks is made from hardened steel, while costlier padlocks may have boron alloy steels to make them more difficult to cut. Many high end padlocks are also protected with metal covers over the shackles that protect them from bolt cutters. They are also one of the most common types of locks used in residential and commercial settings. Some are designed to withstand extreme elements while others are made for indoor use only.

Top 5 Tips for Choosing Locks for your Rental Property

Now that you understand the different door locks, here are tips on things you should consider when looking to buy a lock for your rental property.

Tip #1: Consider the price

As already mentioned, locks come in different styles and levels of security. So, naturally, some will cost more than others. Typically, those that cost less tend to also offer the lowest level of security and vice versa. Your best bet to getting the right lock for your rental property is to consider asking your local locksmith or thinking about the security level of the neighborhood the house is in. Is the neighborhood safe or is there a lot of crime? Locksmiths understand how the different locks operate and can therefore help you choose the right one for your investment property’s needs.

Tip #2: Conduct proper research

Once you have a few recommendations, go online and read some reviews. This will help you get some insights on the performance of a lock from people that have actually used them. We strongly recommend that purchasers read reviews from multiple different and reputable sites before settling on the lock that best suits their individual requirements.

Tip #3: Choose a lock that can be easily rekeyed

Now, this is important. As a landlord, you’ll definitely find yourself in a position that requires you to rekey locks often. For example, it could be that a tenant has lost their keys and needs different ones made, or for many other reasons. It could also be necessary to do so before a new tenant moves in. In such scenarios, having locks that can be easily rekeyed will make your life as a landlord much easier. Kwikset Smartkey locks are ideal in such situations. In addition, they are not only cost-effective, but they are also pick and bump resistant. These types of locks however typically don’t provide the highest level of security as some other locks might that use multiple security pins and sidebars opposed to reset-able wafers.

Tip #4: Consider the aesthetics of the locks

As a landlord, you also want to consider the physical appearance of the locks. To stand out of the competition, it’s important to make your investment property as appealing as possible. So, when choosing a lock, make sure to pick one that matches your rental home’s finish, color, and/or style. Nevertheless, while aesthetics are certainly important, pay attention not to prioritize them over other fundamental factors.

Tip #5: Consider the endurance of the locks

onsite-property-management-fort-collins-colorado.jpg

You will also want to consider the endurance of a lock before buying it. Generally, the grade of a particular lock is directly proportional to how the lock endures under pressure.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) rating system was developed by the Builder’s Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA). This system of grading locks ranges from 1 (top grade) to 3 (the lowest grade). When grading, the ANSI looks at various factors, including the latch length, toughness, and longevity of the lock. Read more on Doorware.com

Grade one locks are commonly referred to as “heavy-duty” locks. They are the most expensive and offer the greatest security level. They are tested to withstand a million closing/opening cycles and a dozen strikes of 75 pounds of force.

Grade two locks are designed for use in access points that have low or medium amounts of traffic.

Grade three locks are the lowest strength locks. That said, they are by no means inferior. As a matter of fact, they are usually but not always of higher quality than ordinary non-ANSI locks.

Read more about the grade levels.

Choosing the right lock for your rental property’s needs can be daunting. Luckily for you, these 5 tips will help ease the decision-making process and should assist when it comes to choosing the right locks for your rental property. Just remember to hire a professional locksmith service whenever necessary.

Top 10 Reasons Homes and Businesses Rekey Their Locks

In this blog post, we’ll be going over our top 10 reasons that homeowners and businesses choose to have their locks rekeyed. There are of course other reasons that aren’t on this list, but these are, in our opinion, the most common reasons that individuals and businesses seek lock rekeying services.

See our other informational articles: Rekeying VS Replacing Locks, What Is Lock Rekeying, and Differences Between Lock Changes & Rekeying.

locksmith-services-longmont-lock-rekeying.jpg

1. When moving into a new property

When purchasing a new home or property, it’s always highly recommended that rekeying the home be one of the first things that the new homeowners do. Rekeying a home isn’t a difficult or lengthy process, nor is it too expensive, but it could potentially save hassle and headaches down the road. When a lock is rekeyed, the old key will no longer function, and instead, a new and different key will work. This is ideal for those who are moving into a new piece of property and want to make sure that the old owners can’t get back inside.

2. When keys go missing or aren’t returned

It’s common for homeowners and businesses to request a rekeying service if they’ve lent out keys that haven’t been returned. This could be for many different reasons, but a common reason might be a pet sitter who hasn’t returned house keys. Likewise, this could also apply to contractors and employees, if keys have been given out and they have not been returned, a rekeying service is a possibility often considered.

3. When a roommate moves out

If someone is moving out, it might be a good idea to have the residence rekeyed to ensure they can’t get back inside. It’s not rude to have locks rekeyed after someone moves out, even if they left on positive terms. Having a locksmith rekey home locks after a roommate has moved out is often an ideal solution to provide peace of mind, knowing that they wouldn’t be able to get back inside without being invited in. Our mobile locksmiths have helped customers who’ve decided to rekey their locks because their friends and previous roommates wouldn’t stop letting themselves back in their home to watch TV and eat from their fridge.

4. After a breakup or divorce

lock-rekeying-services-north-colorado.jpg

When a bad breakup or divorce occurs, often it’s a smart idea to have locks rekeyed. Even if the breakup is amicable, we recommend a lock rekeying service. Some individuals can be vengeful and vindictive after their feelings are hurt, or if they feel misused or abused. To ensure the highest level of safety and security for one's belongings after a breakup, it’s generally a good idea to have a home rekeyed, just to caution on the safe side of things. Our locksmiths have heard horror stories about bad breakups that have resulted in ex’s stealing things from their homes, like TV’s, electronics, computers, and even in some petty cases, ex’s have stolen mattresses , beds, stoves, fridges, and things they don’t even need as a way to cause pain and suffering. Rekeying locks is highly common after individuals breakup and someone moves out, for whatever the reasons may be.

5. If things start to go missing without signs of forced entry

Sometimes things may start to appear missing from home without a sign of a break-in. While not always the case, one explanation might be that an individual has a working key, and is letting themselves into the property to take items. This is a very rare occurrence, but it has happened to a select few in the past. We recommend that all homeowners who experience missing items regularly, first check their locks and points of entry. If all locks are fully functional, perhaps a rekeying service will stop any potential intruders from getting back inside to take more items. This is of course just one possible explanation as to how intruders could be gaining entry without forcing their way in.

6. If an employee is fired or quits without returning their keys

If an employee is terminated and doesn’t return their working keys, it could leave a potential security lapse as that individual should no longer have access to the premises. When an employee quits or is fired, they must return any working keys they have. Many times businesses will choose to rekey their locks even if their terminated employee has returned keys, just to be on the safe side of things, in-case the employee in question made a key duplicate. Most locksmiths will always recommend a rekeying service after an employee is let go or fired.

top-10-reasons-people-rekey-their-homes-and-businesses-locksmith-services-longmont.jpg

7. As a precautionary security measure every few years

Some homeowners and businesses like to keep it fresh when it comes to their security. While rekeying a lock won’t change the security of it, it can serve as a way to retain control over key copies, especially if many copies have been lent out in the past. Every few years some homeowners find it practical to have their locks rekeyed to be sure that they’re still the only ones who have working copies.

8. To have all locks be on the same keys

Many homeowners and businesses will rekey their existing locks so that they can be on matching keys. For example, a homeowner with three separate doors might have three separate keys to operate each door. With a rekeying service, the homeowner could have all their home locks rekeyed to the same key, meaning that all their door locks would be on the same matching key. This is ideal for those who are interested in reducing the number of keys they have to carry with them at all times. Homeowners who are interested in consolidating their multiple different keys into one singular key that works with all the locks may find that a rekeying service is of interest to them.

9. If you’ve lost track of where keys are and who has spare copies

Often homeowners may hide spare keys on the premises for the event that they find themselves locked out and unable to get back inside. If this is the case, it’s also possible for others to find hidden spare keys too. Frequently, homeowners will require a rekeying service after they’ve become locked out, and realize that their spare key isn’t in its supposed hiding spot. While there are many different reasons that keys might not be in the hiding spot they were left in, sometimes it can be as simple as the homeowner forgetting where they left it. Whatever the reason may be though, oftentimes homeowners will choose to rekey their locks after they can’t find spare keys or if their friends or family have lost spare keys they were lent for safekeeping.

10. After a big job like a home renovation with multiple different companies and contractors who have key copies

The last and final most common time that individuals and businesses choose to rekey their property is after a big job like a renovation. Renovations can be expensive, and it’s not uncommon for homeowners or businesses to leave spare keys with the individual companies that are providing the services. This is highly practical and convenient for the owner, as the workers can let themselves in and out as they please, however, it could potentially leave the owner open to security risks. Often homeowners and businesses will choose to have their property re-keyed after a big job in which multiple companies have had access to the property and locks without supervision. This is just a precaution, but it is still done by many. Most would rather spend the small amount that it costs on a rekeying service rather than constantly have to worry or risk their items going missing.

Summary

There are many different reasons that homeowners and businesses will opt for a rekeying service. In our opinion, the top ten most frequently requested reasons for lock rekeying services are:

  • Moving into a new property

  • When keys aren’t returned

  • After a roommate moves out

  • After a breakup

  • If things start to go missing

  • If an employee is let go

  • As a precautionary measure

  • To have locks be on the same key

  • When keys go missing

  • After a big job, like a home renovation.

Locked Out Of Your Home? Now What?

Locked out of your home and not sure what to do? Here are the 4 steps we recommend.

In this article, we are going to cover the 4 steps that can be taken when experiencing a home lockout situation. We highly recommend against breaking windows as repair bills can be costly and there are many more practical solutions to be considered. Many other solutions could be more cost-effective than a repair service.

1. Check all other entrances

locked-out-of-house-now-what.jpg

The first and foremost step that one should consider when experiencing a lockout situation is to check all doors. While this article is about homes, it’s a good tip for automotive lockouts as well. If leaving out the front door and having it close behind you, resulting in a lockout situation, a good first step is to check all entry doors. Many times homeowners and renters who become locked out may find that other doors are unlocked and can be used for entry. Good doors to try include front doors, side doors, back doors, garage doors, and other doors. Windows on the ground floor could also be checked. If there are upstairs windows that are unlocked, it may be a good idea to try those if a ladder can safely be obtained. Additionally, many homeowners who become locked out can try other entryways also, like perhaps a doggie-door that can be squeezed through. If there’s an open dog door but the opening is too small to crawl through, consider if anyone that you know from the neighborhood nearby is small enough to assist.

Some doors are easier to get into than others, and that’s why it’s always important to do a walk-around when first becoming locked out. Often individuals will find that they can get back inside their home by going back in through a different route.

2. If possible, find a spare key

lock-rekeying-boulder-colorado.jpg

If you’re locked out and unable to get back inside your home, it might be a good idea to seek out a spare key that could get you back inside. If you’re a renter, it might be possible to visit a leasing office or call a property maintenance person. If you’ve hidden a key previously around your property in the expectation of becoming locked out, it might be the perfect time for that spare key to shine. If a key wasn’t previously hidden around the property for this very reason, other people might have a spare key. If no leasing office or property management company is affiliated with your property and no one can assist in that regard, possibly consider family and friends. Are there any family, friends, or significant others who have a working copy of the key? Perhaps they could assist, or they could make an extra copy and come to your rescue by letting you back inside. If a spare key can’t be located, we still recommend against breaking a window or kicking in a door as repair bills can be expensive. When a door is kicked in, the framing will splinter and crack, which could be a hefty fine from the homeowner or a large repair bill in-and-of-itself. Instead of breaking a window or kicking down a door, try to find a spare key, and if that can’t be accomplished, then maybe step 3 may be more helpful.

3. Try to get in yourself

With certain doors that aren’t framed tightly, it may be possible to jimmy open the lock yourself. This occasionally works with a few handles and knobs, however, too much pressure or force could cause damage to the lock. Many people will try the credit card trick, but this rarely works except on a select few doors that aren’t properly secured. Additionally, many people also find that after trying to open a doorknob lock using their credit card, they will still be locked out, and their credit card will be ruined. Credit cards are not meant to be used to open doors, and rubbing the card's magnetic strip on the metal latch could cause it to not swipe properly, alternatively, carded chips might become damaged in the process as well. Locksmiths have more luck jimmying open doorknob locks because they use specialized equipment that is meant for opening doors. That being said, it is sometimes possible for individuals to regain entry themselves when locked out. Another thing that homeowners who are locked out can be on the look for is improperly installed doorknobs. It’s uncommon, but some entry doors on homes will have doorknobs that are installed backwards, meaning that the screws are facing the outside instead of the inside. If this is the case, it might be possible to unscrew the doorknob and unlock the door by interacting with the latch. Taking off a doorknob should be simple with the correct tools, if it’s not, perhaps the situation is more complex and a professional needs to be called in to help you back into your home.

4. Call a locksmith

new-key-services-longmont-colorado.jpg

If all other options have been exhausted, it might be time to call for a professional. A locksmith is a skilled tradesman, or woman, who is highly skilled in regards to dealing with lock and key situations. If you’re locked out of your home and need to get back inside, and there are no other alternatives, a locksmith company is who should be called on. Locksmith companies are highly proficient and skilled at opening locked homes for those who are locked out, and it’s actually a lot of what locksmiths do. Mobile locksmiths are technicians who travel around their local area and assist those who need it at the customer's location, and this includes lockout services as well as lock replacements, installations, rekeys, and more.

It’s not uncommon for individuals to find themselves locked out of their home with their personal belongings like car keys and personal phones inside and out of reach. If this is the case, it might be an option to visit a neighbors home so they can call a locksmith service for you. As an alternative, many libraries offer access to computers with web access that can be used for researching local locksmith companies. One of the most important things to remember when it comes to being locked out, is that as long as pets have food and water, and your schedule is open, there’s no immediate rush to get back inside. This is a huge relief for some to hear and consider because being locked out can be very stressful, and calling a local locksmith to help is a great option for many.

A locksmith service is in a prime position to help those who are locked out because locksmiths spend quite a lot of time unlocking homes, businesses, vehicles, and more for customers who are locked out due to missing keys, or because keys are locked inside. Locksmiths can help with opening properties like commercial spaces, residential homes, and automobiles, all without damage. If you’re locked out of your home because of keys being locked inside or because they’re missing, who better to call than someone that specializes in locks and keys? Locksmiths usually provide emergency services too, which means that most people will be able to get assistance no matter the time of night or day. It’s not uncommon for individuals to become accidentally locked out late at night or early in the morning and need a locksmith service to have someone at their location to let them back inside.

Locksmith companies are ideal for those who need a fast and practical solution for their lockout situation. A good locksmith will only charge between $75-$130 for a house lockout service, depending on the type of locks and the tools required to open them. There are of course also circumstances and situations where it can be done for less. Some homeowners can get assistance through their insurance or AAA membership, however, people will opt for a locksmith service instead of waiting the sometimes 4+ hours it may take for help. If you require a locksmith to let you back into your home, ask about what kinds of discounts they can offer. Here at Locksmith Services Longmont, a mobile locksmith company in Northern Colorado, we offer a senior citizens discount, as well as a discount for those suffering from economic hardships due to COVID-19.

It’s important to note that if a toddler or dog is locked inside a hot vehicle in emergency heat conditions, the local fire or police department may be able to help, however, it will depend on your location, the temperature, and your local departments operating procedures. Most local locksmiths have a 20-minute or less emergency response time.

How to avoid getting locked out in the future

Once you’re back inside or waiting on a locksmith to arrive, it might be time to find out some of the different ways to avoid becoming locked out in the future. Here are a few additional steps that can be taken to future-proof becoming locked out again.

1. Leave a spare key with a trusted friend or family member.

As we mentioned before, one of the easiest things to do is to leave a spare key copy with a trusted family member or friend. That way, if you ever become locked out again in the future, you can visit their location to retrieve the spare key. It’s always a good idea to future proof a lockout situation, so if you choose to leave a spare key with a friend, it may be a good idea to assume any personal phone might be locked inside and out of reach.

One option for future proofing might be to leave an emergency contact box somewhere completely safe where no one will ever find it with relevant social contacts and business cards. That way if you’re locked out without your phone, you can still have access to your personal information and important numbers of who to call. This is the best option for those who are extremely concerned about their homes security.

2. Hide a spare key somewhere on the property so it can be used if you’re ever locked out again.

Another option, if you’re less concerned about a key being outside, might be to instead leave a spare key hidden outside in case of emergencies. Instead of leaving an emergency contact box hidden, you could keep a hidden lockbox containing a spare key, or even just a hidden box with your key. It is important to note though that anyone that finds this will now have a working house key, and most people won’t check their key’s hiding place daily to ensure their key is still there. Some home intruders and burglars will enter through the front door after finding a hidden key somewhere on the property. This is why we typically recommend hiding an emergency contact box that only contains phone numbers, in case it’s found by a criminal, there’s not much that can be done with it or much reason for them to spend their energy on phone numbers alone. If you are going to hide a spare key somewhere on your property to avoid becoming locked out again, we recommend making sure it’s hidden in a very good spot.

3. Consider using a keypad lock

The last method we recommend when it comes to avoiding future lockout situations is to consider the installation of a keypad lock. Keypad locks are types of electronic locks that don’t require keys to function, they work by using a keypad with buttons or a touch screen for operation. There are many different keypad locks on the market today that can be useful for avoiding a future lockout situation, but we recommend Schlage keypad locks or Kwikset keypad locks to most of our customers because of the wide availability at most major hardware stores.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on how you avoid getting locked out, especially if there’s anything we missed. Let us know in the comments below!

Top 10 Ways To Avoid Getting Locked Out

Getting locked out of your home, vehicle, or business is certainly frustrating and often occurs during very inconvenient times. In this article we are going to go over our Top 10 Ways To Avoid Getting Locked Out.

1. Lock From Outside — Probably the best piece of advice that one could give when it comes to avoiding getting locked out would be to always ensure that one is locking a door from the outside. This goes for vehicles as well as homes. Instead of locking a doorknob and closing it behind you, or locking your car door before shutting it, consider using keys to lock the door behind you. This will ensure that you don’t become locked out as you will be unable to lock the door without keys, which is a great reminder that the keys are still inside. Choosing to lock doors manually after exiting is a great tactic when it comes to not getting locked out in the first place. We also recommend that homeowners check that their doorknob locks are unlocked before closing a door behind them, this ensures that in the event that keys aren’t where they’re supposed to be, one can simply go back inside and retrieve them.

2. Hide A Spare Key — Many homeowners and vehicle owners who wish to not become locked out are finding that hiding a spare key is a great backup plan. The only downside to hiding a spare key is that someone else could also potentially find it. If a home intruder or vehicle thief finds a working key, it will eliminate the security measures that the locks provide, as the intruder or thief will simply be able to use the key they find. This is definitely a “double-edged” tip if you will, on one hand leaving a spare key will be ideal for property owners who require it when they’re locked out, but on the other, it can mitigate any security that locks may provide as intruders could find the key and use it themselves to gain entry. When hiding spare keys we recommend to not hide them in close proximity to the front door, especially not under rugs or doormats unless for short periods of time only. It isn’t unheard of for home intruders to check under mats, in potted plants, and around hanging lights in the vicinity of the front door when they’re looking for spare keys to use to gain entry. To achieve the highest level of security possible, hide a spare key in a lock box, and bury the lock box somewhere it can be remembered easily but not found.

We recommend against leaving a spare house key inside a personal vehicle. A thief or criminal could randomly break into your vehicle in a crowded parking lot in a smash-and-grab burglary, only to search the glove box and see a home key and a home address on insurance papers. This could lead them to your home, where they could walk right in using the key and take whatever they wanted. Additionally, if your car is parked in a driveway or a street, the criminal could take the key for another day as they already know the home that it works on. Our customers often require rekeying services after a vehicle break-in when they notice that their spare house key has gone missing, forcing them to spend additional money to rekey their home locks to different keys in order to lock-out the criminals.

A good rule of thumb is to always layer security. For example, one could bury a key outside that only unlocks a garage door leading into the garage, and hidden in the garage is a separate key that operates the garage door leading into the house.

For vehicles with programmed ignitions requiring chipped, or transponder keys to run, a good location for a spare key is duct taped behind the back license plate. Many individuals are using a bare metal key that will only unlock the doors, but a key that isn’t programmed, so it will not start the car. This is ideal for individuals who get locked out with the keys inside and need to regain entry quickly. With a screwdriver, they could unscrew their license plate for the emergency spare, and use that to retrieve the fully functional key. This method is preferred by many over magnet boxes that are hidden near the wheels or under the vehicle itself. Many times individuals will become locked out of their vehicle and in need of a professional lockout service because their spare magnet key box fell off or is missing. Our locksmiths have heard this story many different times.

3. Check for keys before leaving — While this tip might relate to the first one, it’s extremely important to always check for keys before closing a door behind you. In the event that a doorknob or a car door is locked when it shuts, it’s important to be sure that working keys are on-hand in case entry is needed again. Consider keeping important items together so they can be easily managed, for example, hang a key rack by the front door and always check it when entering and before exiting. Alternatively, always keep wallets, phones, and keys stored together inside the house so keys are less likely to be forgotten. Many times people will become locked out because they’re focused or thinking about something else, and absent minded when it comes to thinking about their keys. We always recommend that homeowners and automobile drivers lock their vehicles and homes from outside, and to always check that they have their keys before stepping out the door. These two tips work hand-in-hand, following them properly will ensure that individuals never run into lockout situations unless in the case of faulty locks or extenuating circumstances.

4. Replace Malfunctioning Locks — In order to achieve the highest level of reliability when it comes to avoiding getting locked out, it’s always important to take proper care of existing locks. This could mean using Lock Lube to keep the internals functioning smoothly, or even replacing a lock entirely if it’s no longer functioning as it should. Many homeowners, business owners, and vehicle owners see the perks that working locks provide over malfunctioning ones. Hiring a professional locksmith service is a great way to ensure that malfunctioning locks are replaced properly and expertly by skilled lock and key technicians. When it comes to replacing malfunctioning locks, many locksmiths will offer guarantees of work that individuals don’t receive when they purchase and install locks themselves from hardware stores. It’s not uncommon for homeowners to become locked out after they’ve improperly installed a deadbolt or doorknob lock. When it comes to vehicles, we always recommend that individuals seek a key duplication service when their car keys start to become worn down over years of use.

5. Smart Locks & Electronic Locks — A good way to avoid getting locked out is to just ditch the keys altogether. For vehicles, purchasing a car with a keypad might be a good way to go. For homes, there are many different smart locks and electronic locking products that can sync with mobile phones in order to eliminate the need for keys entirely. Certain locks, like the August locks, will unlock when in the presence of an authorized app user. Using a smart locking system, homeowners can ensure that they no longer become locked out due to keys being locked inside or lost completely. If keys are lost, with electronic keypad deadbolts, a homeowner could simply put in the correct operational code to unlock their home door. It is important to note that some electronic deadbolt locks require frequent battery changes, and failure to do so in a timely fashion could possibly result in a lockout situation.

6. Leave A Spare Key With Friends or Family — Leaving a spare key with a trusted friend or family member is also a great way to avoid becoming locked out. When experiencing a lockout situation, one could simply go to their neighbors, or call a family member or friend for assistance. It’s important that when it comes to leaving spare keys with friends or family that they’re trusted individuals. It’s possible to leave a spare house key and/or a spare car key with friends or family in case they become needed due to being locked out. We recommend picking someone within a 5-mile radius if possible. If choosing someone out-of-state, it may take a while for the spare keys to arrive in the mail, which could result in costly hotel bills. It’s generally best to leave a spare key with a local family member or friend that can arrive quickly, or someone that you can quickly take a taxi to. If you’re locked out of your apartment complex, it’s often wise to ask the leasing office if they have a working copy of the key, or if the maintenance workers could unlock the door for you.

7. Change Your Locks — There are currently locks on the market that automatically lock, and doorknobs and lever locks that are very easy to mistakenly lock when closing the door behind. A good way to avoid a lockout situation is to stick with highly reputable and trusted lock brands like Kwikset, Schlage, Baldwin, Emtek, Yale, or Weiser. If a lock is starting to malfunction or act in a manner in which it shouldn’t, it may be time to consider replacing the lock with new ones that work perfectly. It’s not unheard of for businesses and homeowners to become locked out due to not replacing their faulty locks before they break completely. It’s estimated that the average American residential lock will last for roughly 7 years with moderate use. We always recommend that homeowners and businesses repair or replace their faulty locks as soon as issues arise, this can mitigate the need for a locksmith service further into the future. Read our article Rekeying Locks VS Replacing Locks to learn more about the differences between the two.

8. Leave An Upstairs Window Unlocked — A good tactic to avoid becoming locked out is to leave a single upstairs window unlocked, in regards to multistory homes. Most burglars don’t bring their own ladder, so upstairs windows that are left closed but unlocked could be good alternative entry sources for those who find themselves locked out of their house. If there’s access to a vehicle, buying a cheap and refundable ladder from the hardware store might be a good way to regain entry, as opposed to breaking a window or calling on a professional mobile locksmith service to come to your location.

9. Prepare For Power Outages — It’s not uncommon for individuals to become locked out in the event of power outages. A great example of this might be someone who is leaving to go to the grocery store only to find that when they arrive back home, their garage door won’t open. In case power outages occur, it’s important to always have a backup method of entry, this could include house keys to go in through the front door or a side door. Often times individuals will require locksmith services because their garage door opener, or garage clicker, no longer works when power is out. While individuals could wait for the power to come back on, there’s never a guaranteed time, and often times individuals are in a rush, on a schedule, or for this particular example, not wanting their groceries to melt. To avoid becoming locked out of a garage, prepare for power outage situations and always carry a house key that can be used to get back inside.

10. Program Landlords Phone Number & Locksmiths — The last tip that we can recommend to those who are serious about not becoming locked out, is to always have numbers pre-programmed into a mobile phone. Good numbers to have saved include a landlord, property manager, leasing office, or a local locksmith service. Sometimes information will be written down inside the home, but it will be useless to the individual who’s locked out. Consider preparing for the worst case scenario, in advance, and pre-program important numbers into a mobile phone that will be accessible at all times.

Summary

There are many different steps that can be taken to avoid becoming locked out in the first place, and hopefully this article provided useful information. The first and foremost tip that we provide to our customers when they ask us how they can avoid becoming locked out again is that they always use their keys. If you use your keys to lock the door behind you, then you won’t become locked out, you would simply be unable to lock the door. This is the most important tip for vehicles and homes, if you frequently become locked out with the keys locked inside, consider hanging onto the keys at all times and only using them to unlock and lock doors. In addition to always being aware of where the keys are, we always recommend that homeowners and businesses change their lock hardware if it starts to malfunction, and consider keeping a spare key with a trusted individual who resides in the same city or town. Having a spare key in another state is no use to the individual who’s locked out as they’ll likely hire a locksmith as opposed to waiting the days it could potentially take for the spare key to arrive in the mail.

Rekeying Locks VS Replacing Locks — What's The Difference?

Many homeowners and businesses who are in search of a locksmith to replace their locks aren’t familiar with the correct terminology between rekeying a lock and replacing one. With this article, we hope to do our best to clear up any confusion on the matter. Before we can compare the pros and cons of each, lets first take a look at the definitions behind each term.

What Is Lock Rekeying?

locksmith-services-longmont-lock-rekeying.jpg

Lock rekeying is, in essence, changing the keys that work with a specific lock to work with different keys, but all the while maintaining the same lock. Lock rekeying is often the ideal solution for homeowners and businesses who need to change their locks to work with different keys. While there is a multitude of different reasons one might need to consider having their locks rekeyed, generally it comes down security concerns or usability issues. A homeowner or business might be interested in having their locks rekeyed if their locks still function fine, but a copy of their key has ended up in the hands of people in which they do not trust.

Lock rekeying is typically the “better” option for homeowners or businesses who still have perfectly working hardware, have a working key, and need to have their locks work with a different set of operational keys. Rekeying a lock is cheaper than replacing a lock entirely as the hardware stays the same, in comparison to a lock replacement when the locking hardware is changed with “new locks”.

The process of rekeying a lock is typically straightforward, especially if the locksmith in question is an experienced professional. When a lock is rekeyed, it is “deconstructed”, or taken apart if you will, by professional locksmith tools in order to access the inner workings. Once inside the lock, the locksmith can interact with the pins, or tumblers, and change them to match a different set of operational keys. Many homeowners have their locks rekeyed because they have multiple sets of keys for different doors and want to consolidate all of their door locks into one singular key.

While rekeying a lock might seem like it’s too good to be true, that’s because sometimes it can be. If a lock is no longer working correctly or malfunctioning in the process of locking or unlocking, it might be time to replace the lock entirely. Rekeying a lock will not fix it, rekeying implies that the lock is already functioning correctly and simply needs to be switched over to different keys. Read more on our other blog posts Differences Between a Lock Change and a Rekey.

What Is Lock Replacement?

lock-replacement-service-longmont-co.jpg

Lock replacement is different from lock rekeying because instead of just replacing the internal pins or tumblers inside to work with different keys, the entire lock is replaced. This means that all of the metal is swapped out with new pieces. Many homeowners and businesses will need to replace their locks if the locks in question are beyond repair, or if it’s unable to be rekeyed for whatever extraneous circumstances may exist.

Generally lock rekeying is the more affordable option for those who are on a tight budget, but the trade-off for those with older locks can sometimes be worth it. Many times individuals or businesses will call a professional locksmith service to assist with a lock rekey, only to find that the small increase in price for a replacement is worth the investment, especially if the locksmith is already on site. Professional locksmiths will have a stock of spare locks that can be used for brand new lock replacements. It’s impossible to provide an exact estimate for the lifetime of the average American deadbolt or doorknob lock, but if we had to guess, we would estimate the average American lock has a lifespan of 7 - 15 years.

Many times businesses and homeowners will opt to have their locks changed so their property conforms to the same standard of look, which can certainly provide a nice aesthetic touch to those who are looking. For example, someone with a gold deadbolt and a black doorknob might be interested in changing one or both of their locks to new ones in order to achieve a matching color scheme or style.

Performing a lock changing service is optimal for those who have multiple locks from different manufacturers, or lock brands. For example, if a homeowner wants to have their backdoor and front door be on the same key, but both doors have different brands of locks, it might be impossible to do so without a lock change. To put it in layman’s terms: sometimes a key won’t fit in a lock because the key and lock are different brands. This is because many lock brands use proprietary key-ways. A good and common example is the popular brands Kwikset and Schlage.

Often times customers will be required to change certain locks to match the majority brand of their home locks, in order to achieve one working key for all locks. Please note that rekeying and lock changing is different than lock installation, which is the act of drilling new holes into a door and “installing” new locks.

Pros and Cons

locksmith-longmont-co-lock-rekeying-services.jpg

There are certainly a few different pros and cons when it comes to comparing lock rekeying with lock replacing services, but at the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference.

  • Cost - Typically rekeying an existing lock will be the more affordable option over replacing a lock. Rekeying keeps the same lock, while replacing is comparable to buying a new lock.

  • Speed - Both services, when performed by a professional locksmith, should be extremely quick and easy. A professional locksmith will be able to rekey or replace a standard home or business mortise lock in 10-15 minutes, sometimes less, from the time they get started. More locks add more time obviously, but an experienced locksmith will be able to accomplish both tasks with speed and alacrity.

  • Improving Security - Rekeying a lock won’t do anything to enhance security, except to lock someone out if they already have the working key. When a lock is replaced, it’s possible to choose a higher security lock to be installed, versus rekeying a lock which retains the same lock hardware and security, but only changes the keys that operate it. Many people are now choosing to install electronic deadbolts over mechanical ones. If opting for an electronic deadbolt, we recommend selecting one that has a keyhole for emergencies in the event of battery failure. Many individuals find themselves locked out of their electronic locks after their batteries have died.

  • Customization - Many homeowners enjoy customizing their home to the full extent of their abilities, and that includes the small things such as how locks look. While they might not seem important to many, chances are the typical person interacts with a doorknob or deadbolt at least once per day. When it comes to functionality and high living standards, investing in the right locks can often make a huge impact.

What’s The Best Choice?

There’s certainly no answer to this question as it all boils down to the circumstances, personal preference and individual opinion. Depending on the circumstances, one might opt to have their locks rekeyed while another would have them replaced. If a lock is functioning properly and new keys are needed to lock someone out or to have multiple locks on the same key, a lock rekeying service is probably the best bet. On the other hand, if a lock is no longer working as it should, there are multiple different brands, or new color is wanted, a lock changing service is probably the ideal option.

8 Things To Try When Locked Out Of Your Home

Getting locked out of your home is never fun, especially for those who are on a tight schedule. As a locksmith company, we urge those who are locked out against breaking a home window in an attempt to regain entry. Window repair services can be costly, more so than simply hiring a locksmith service in the first place, if no other options are available. While being locked out of your home can be stressful, it’s a situation that can thankfully be fixed. Here we are going to go over 8 different things that homeowners can try themselves before calling on the services of a locksmith. These recommendations are great for those who have the keys locked inside accidentally.

8-things-to-try-when-locked-out-of-your-home-locksmiths.jpg

Here are our 8 recommendations for regaining entry when locked out of your home:

  1. Try Other Doors

While some homeowners might only have one entry door, others are encouraged to try all their entry doors when locked out. This includes not only trying the door that the homeowner left out of, but also back doors, side doors, garage doors, and any other doors or sliding glass doors.

Most individuals will ensure that all their doors are locked tightly before leaving, however, this step can sometimes be a good start while thinking about what future steps to take. It’s not common, but occasionally a homeowner that’s become locked out will be able to regain entry through a different door that wasn’t locked.

  2. Dog Door

For homeowners with doggy-doors, it could be a good idea to attempt regaining entry this way. While adult homeowners might not be able to easily crawl through a doggy-door without getting stuck, children can easily crawl through and unlock the door from the inside. This method only works when the doggy-door isn’t blocked by anything.

  3. Try Windows

A window that was left unlocked or open might be a good way to regain entry for those who are locked out of their home. It’s fairly simple to lift the windows mesh screen off if one is present, however, mesh screens do vary and some are harder to remove than others.

Homeowners that find an unlocked window might be able to crawl through and get back inside their home. Typically all windows will be locked though, but this is still a good step to try.

  4. Check Upstairs With A Ladder If Possible

This step is good for those who have easy access to a spare ladder that’s lying around. In the event of experiencing a home lockout situation, trying second-floor windows and balcony and/or patio doors might be a wise idea. When homeowners are going out for a few hours, perhaps to simply run errands, they might neglect to lock their upstairs doors and/or windows because they expect to be home soon. If this is the case, consider trying upstairs windows and/or doors through the use of a ladder.

  5. Look For Hidden Keys

Homeowners who have hidden keys for a lockout situation might be in the perfect moment to take advantage of that fact. Many times individuals will hide spare keys in fake rocks, under door-mats, in potted plants, hanging lights, and in other locations; to prevent getting locked out.

  6. Call For A Spare Key

It’s common for some to allow good neighbors who are highly trusted to have a key copy for emergencies. If not a neighbor, perhaps a family member, relationship partner, cleaner, babysitter, etc… might have a spare key that can be used. If someone else has the working keys, it might be possible to use them to regain entry.

This is a good method for those who aren’t in a rush to regain entry. If a spare key is in another state or hundreds of miles away, this option might not be the best, as a locksmith service could be cheaper when compared to gas prices, travel costs, and hotel fees. If a spare key is close, consider picking it up, but we recommend calling a locksmith service before booking a hotel.

  7. Check Youtube & Try Yourself

This isn’t the best method for most as it can take up a lot of time and the results might not be very precise. Improper methods of regaining entry can cause damage to both the door and the lock itself. While we recommend against attempting to regain entry without the correct tools and skills, it is something that can be considered by those who aren’t too worried about causing potential damage to their locks and/or door.

  8. Call For A Locksmith Service

If nothing has worked and all methods of regaining entry seem exhausted, then consider calling on the services of a local locksmith near you. A simple Google search for a locksmith near me will reveal all the local locksmiths in your area who can assist with home lockout services. A professional locksmith will offer upfront pricing and have prompt response times of less than an hour. Calling on a professional locksmith is typically the best for homeowners who are locked out of their home locks and have no other recourse for gaining entry.

Summary

When locked out of your home, there are a few things that can be tried before calling on the assistance of professional locksmiths. Consider checking doors that might have been left unlocked, double-checking windows & upstairs entryways if possible, and/or try to find a hidden or spare key that could be used. If nothing works, consider calling on the services of a professional locksmith in your area.

10 Tips For Staying Safe At Home

In this guide we go over 10 different ways that a homeowner or individual can keep themselves safe at home, as well as some useful tips and tricks that might be of interest. We believe it’s always important to remain vigilant in any situation. Check out these 10 steps that can be followed for maximum home safety and preparedness.

10. Keep your emergency numbers ready

10-tips-for-staying-safe-at-home-8.jpg

It's always a good rule to have the numbers of your local emergency responders, like the police station, fire department, local locksmiths, and nearby hospitals written somewhere on-hand for emergency situations. Other good emergency contacts to have are poison control centers, trusted neighbors, and nearby relatives or family friends. Make sure that any emergency contact list is legible and always in a safe, memorable spot; this can save valuable time in an emergency situation. If you are staying in a foreign country, make sure you know their emergency telephone numbers.

9. Be aware of your emergency plans

10-tips-for-staying-safe-at-home-10.jpg

Although many people don't like to think about the worst case scenario, it's usually a good idea to have at least a basic emergency plan for the most common situations such as: fires, natural disasters, and home invasions. Make sure you always have multiple escape routes in the event of a fire, and if you aren't alone, make sure others know where to go in an emergency. It might be a good idea to prepare for natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, fires, and even hurricanes, depending on your location. If you are making emergency plans for a home invasion, make sure to think out all the possible escape routes, where you could hide inside the house, plans for your family, etc. Don't be caught in an emergency situation whilst being unprepared.

8. Keep your emergency supplies safe and accessible

10-tips-for-staying-safe-at-home-11.jpg

Time is your enemy in an emergency. Keep all emergency supplies readily available and always in the same location so they can be easily found in a crisis situation. No one wants to spend time looking for their supplies in the middle of an emergency. Keep your first aid kit and other medical supplies in a bathroom drawer or designate a closet shelf for holding emergency supplies. Keep one or more fire extinguishers throughout your home so you can ensure that it doesn't burn down if there’s a fire, perhaps in the kitchen while cooking dinner. If you live with others, make sure everyone knows how to operate the fire extinguisher. Keep one of your fire extinguishers in your kitchen under the sink, and, if you have more than one fire extinguisher, keep one on the other side of your home. Keep a flashlight or two in obvious places around the house in case your lights go out due to a power outage.

7. Don't leave spare keys in obvious places for intruders to find

10-tips-for-staying-safe-at-home-6.jpg

It's very common for home owners to leave a spare key hidden in their front or backyard in the event of being locked out. Some burglars go door to door checking in common spots for spare keys lying around, like under door mats, potted plants, garden rocks, etc. The best place to leave your spare key would be with a trusted neighbor or in a locked hiding place. A good example of a locked hiding place would be hiding the house key in a backyard shed, locking the shed, and hiding the shed key very well, thus adding an extra layer of security to your home.

6. Never mention that you are staying home alone

10-tips-for-staying-safe-at-home-5.jpg

While this is especially true for kids, it also applies to adults. If you are ever alone and someone comes to your door, always be skeptical, and never tell them that you're home alone as you might seem like an easier target. If you happen to be living in an apartment building or gated community, don't let just anyone that buzzes you in. It's also a good idea to not post on social media, like Twitter or Facebook, that you're home by yourself.

5. Use an alarm system or security cameras

Having an alarm system or a security camera system can give you the early alert you might need to escape or prepare for the home invader. Security cameras allow you to see any problems that might arise around the house or surrounding property. There are multiple different types of alarm systems, so make sure you get one that works best for your needs. Some alarm systems are built for detecting intruders, while others are geared towards the homeowner's health by reading for smoke from fires, carbon monoxide, and other harmful emissions.

4. Keep all your doors and windows locked

10-tips-for-staying-safe-at-home-4.jpg

Never take a chance with your safety when it comes to leaving doors and windows open or unlocked. Countless home invaders and serial killers have preyed upon homeowners that have inadvertently left their home open to unwelcome guests. Don't make the same fatal mistake and always keep your doors and windows locked when you can't keep an eye on them. This can be particularly important for ground floor windows and doors where intruders are most likely to gain entry. It might even be wise to install additional security hardware such as security bars on your windows, depending on where you live.

3. Don't go in your home if it appears broken into

10-tips-for-staying-safe-at-home-3.jpg

This is a pretty solid piece of advice for staying safe. If you come home and you see a broken window or a door wide open that you remember closing, don't go in for a closer look. Call the police from a neighbor's house and wait for them to arrive and check the home for you. If you remember leaving with all the lights off, but you come home and there are lights on, then something is out of place. Try calling the house phone if you have one to see if a family member is home. Checking on the situation by yourself could be dangerous, especially if there are thieves in your home still trying to ransack the place. Don't put yourself in harm's way!

2. Be aware of your surroundings

10-tips-for-staying-safe-at-home-2.jpg

This might seem like pretty common knowledge, but always be aware of your surroundings, even at home. If you are staying home alone, make sure you aren't listening to music or have your TV too loud so you can still hear your surroundings. If you are on your computer playing loud video games and you can't hear someone breaking a window in the other room, it might end badly for you, as you probably wouldn't hear them sneaking up on you either.

1. Look at your home as a home invader would

10-tips-for-staying-safe-at-home-1.jpg

Don't become a burglar by any means, but take a good look at your home from all sides. How would a burglar approach your home? Are there large windows that could be easily broken? Is the backdoor lock the same security rating as the front door? Do you have security deterrents like an alarm system, cameras, or a dog? Ask yourself all these questions and more to prepare in an appropriate manner. The more you prepare for a home invader the less of a target you become. Home invaders are lazy and they typically strike hard and fast. Most burglaries happen in under 10 minutes and more than half of them are from forced entry, like smashing a window. If you have some large windows with a bad view you could plant some large bushes in front of them to both hide your windows and act as security barriers.

Top 10 Ways To Secure Your Home Windows

There are many different ways to keep residential home windows secure from criminals. Don't let yourself fall victim to the various common mistakes that homeowners might run into. According to the FBI, burglaries of residential properties account for 71.6 percent of all burglary offenses. Windows are a common point of entry for a criminal and they tend to be left unlocked or open at much higher rates than doors - particularly in warmer weather. Check out our top 10 list for ways that a homeowner can secure their home windows against unauthorized entry from burglars and other home invaders.

10.Use plants and bushes outside residential windows

A great way to enhance both the security of a home, and the beauty of it, is by surrounding the ground floor windows with various plants and bushes. While not hindering the homeowners ability to get fresh air and see out the window, plants can be both beautiful and helpful in regards to keeping ones home safe. By planting thorny, sharp, and prickly flowers or bushes such as cacti around the outside of the home, it can drastically reduce the homes appeal to a burglar or home invader. Not only can nature help keep your home safer, but it will also look great and could potentially increase the home's value.

9. Install motion sensor lights outside ground floor windows

Another good method for securing your ground floor windows from intruders is to keep them well lit and covered by motion sensor lights. Motion sensor lights work by activating when they detect movement. These are great types of lights to add around your windows if you are trying to scare off burglars and other criminals.

8. Keep all doors and windows locked

The BJS reported that about 40% of the time criminals gain unlawful entry into an unoccupied residence, it's through an unlocked door or window. Remember to always keep your windows and doors locked when you aren't home. The most likely time for a burglary to happen is when no one is home during the summer.

7. Get security warning stickers and signs

Another great way to scare criminals away is by placing security warning stickers on your windows. Even if you don't have an alarm system, security stickers will tell intruders that you do, making them think twice about their actions. According to a study by UNC Charlotte, approximately 83 percent of burglars would try to determine if an alarm was present before attempting a burglary and 60 percent said they would seek an alternative target if there was an alarm on-site.

6. Add extra locks to all sliding windows

In a lot of cases, windows are secured by latches instead of locks, meaning they can be more easily compromised. Add additional security hardware to further secure your windows and prevent unauthorized access. A lot of windows are easily forced open as they are only held closed by a plastic tab that can be broken. Keep your windows locked tight with interior metal window locks. These block the tracks that the windows slide in so that the window can't be moved.

5. Keep all windows barred shut

In addition to keeping your windows locked you could invest in some security bars to keep your windows barred shut. Security bars are an important tool for keeping your most vulnerable windows secure such as those that face busy streets, dark alleys, parking lots, and trails. Show criminals that you're prepared for them with a visible security bar and make them reconsider selecting your home as an easy target. Prime-Line Products offers steel window bars through suppliers such as Amazon.

4. Keep window blinds and curtains closed

Keep your windows covered so criminals can't see inside your home. Don't let potential burglars or home invaders window shop your belongings. Keep prying eyes out and your windows covered with blinds and curtains. Another great security solution is to replace your transparent glass window with frosted glass to obscure vision into your home.

3. Use window alarms to alert you of movement

There are many standalone alarms you can purchase to keep your windows protected. Window alarms are perfect for downstairs windows, that are near entryways, or in bedrooms; as they simply stick to glass with no installation. The vibration of the glass sets off the alarm which should wake and alert everyone home that someone is breaking in. Not only do these devices alert you to any potential break-ins, but they are also visible to criminals. This lets them know that by breaking into your home they will be drawing a lot of attention to themselves, which is something thieves and burglars try to avoid.

2. Use metal bars or grills on ground floor windows

Although bars might not be the most attractive things to look at, they are excellent for keeping burglars or home invaders out. Research shows that that if it takes more than four or five minutes to break into a building, the criminal will go elsewhere. Security bars and grills provide too tight an obstacle for burglars to climb through, yet they are large enough to not obscure your view or airflow. The only downside to burglar bars is that they could pose a potential fire hazard.

1. Reinforce glass windows

The statistics show that in the USA, of all burglaries in 2010, 60% involved forcible entry. Reinforce your glass windows by covering them with a clear protective film to keep them from being shattered easily. You could also invest in stronger glass for your windows such as reinforced glass, smash-proof glass, acrylic glass, or Polycarbonate.

Keep Your Home Windows Secure

Your safety is important and that's why you should always be mindful of residential window security. Don't undermine your home's safety by neglecting the security of your windows. Remember that your home's security is only as strong as it's weakest link, so stay safe and stay protected.

Top 11 Tips For Backyard Security

When it comes to considering the safety of your home, it's important not to neglect the security of your backyard. It's not uncommon for thieves to jump a backyard fence in order to gain access to a back door. Burglars sometimes target back doors because they typically have lower security than front doors. Check out some of these tips on how you can keep burglars away from your home by keeping your backyard more secure. InterNACHI reports that 22% of burglars enter through the back door.

Keep Items In Your Backyard Secure

items-in-backyard-secure-locksmiths-1.jpg

Often times burglars will jump a backyard fence so they can steal items that have been left out. Criminals will steal items from a backyard area like barbecues, patio furniture, bikes, pool supplies, tools, and more. Make sure that every effort is being taken to secure your home. Keep it protected by securing your backyard from unauthorized entry.

Make criminals uninterested in your items by making sure that all your larger belongings are tied down with metal cable.

If You Have A Gate To Your Backyard — Keep It Locked

keep-gate-locked-locksmiths-2.jpg

Keeping your side or back gate locked is another step towards increased backyard security. When you keep the entrances to your backyard locked you are adding additional steps for a burglar to go through. The more steps a burglar has to take to gain entry to your home, the more secure your home is. If a burglar thinks your home will take too long to get into then they will most likely try to find an easier target altogether.

Always try to keep your backyard gate locked when you aren't using it as to not become an easier target.

Make Sure Your Fence Is Tall And Strong

big-tall-fence-locksmiths-3.jpg

The ideal backyard fence is one that is difficult to climb or break through. You'll want a fence that is strong, tall, and as sturdy as possible. It might be a good idea to invest in a metal fence that has sharp points on the top as these are great for deterring burglars.

Make sure your fence is high so criminals can't jump into your backyard. Metal and stone fences are typically better than wood because they tend to last longer and provide a sturdier level of protection.

Keep Your Backyard Lit Up At Night

lit-up-backyard-safety-tips-locksmith-services-longmont.jpg

Another good way to keep burglars away from your backyard is to install some motion sensing security lights. These are the types of lights that only turn on when motion is detected. These are great for using in your backyard to protect your gate, patio, pathways, deck, or driveway.

Outdoor motion sensor lights are usually weatherproof and perfect for scaring away criminals trying to lurk in the dark. Flood lights are also good for keeping criminals uninterested.

Consider Getting A Dog

locksmith-services-longmont-backyard-dog-4.jpg

The bigger the dog, the better the deterrent. Statistics show that large dogs are good for deterring burglars and the bigger the dog, the less likely a thief is to attempt a break-in. Even if you don't have a dog, you can still put up a "Beware of Dog" sign to scare off potential intruders.

Install Security Cameras Around Your Backyard

security-cameras-locksmith-services-longmont.jpg

Security cameras are a good deterrent for burglars if they are installed around the perimeter of your backyard. Consider getting video cameras that have night vision, motion detection, and are weatherproofed enough for outdoor use. Make sure that your cameras are visible enough for any potential burglars to see and high enough that they can't be reached without a ladder.

Don't Leave Ladders Lying Around Your Backyard

ladder-security-tips-locksmiths-longmont.jpg

Most burglars don't bring their own ladders. So don't make it easier for them by leaving one laying around in your backyard. Whenever you leave a ladder out, you are opening the second story of your home to intruders.

Remember to always keep your ladders locked in your shed or garage. If you have to leave them in the backyard, make sure they are chained and padlocked so they can't be used against you.

Keep boxes and other objects that criminals could use locked away so they can't be stacked and climbed.

Place A Security Sign In Your Backyard

Alarm systems are great for preventing theft because burglars typically want to avoid alarms going off when they break into a home. Even if you don't have an alarm system, consider placing some security signs around your backyard just to make burglars think you do. Place security signs near any entrances or gates that lead into your backyard.

Make Sure Your Backdoor Has High Quality Locks

Another thing that criminals look for in an easy target is a poor quality lock that is easy to force or pick open. Consider investing in a high quality lock that not only adds an increased layer of protection to your home, but will also help to deter criminals looking for weak locks they can exploit. Burglars and home invaders know that back door locks can sometimes be less secure than front door locks.

Use A Wireless Alarm In Your Yard Or Backyard

A good form of advanced warning is to install a wireless alarm in your backyard. These devices detect motion in order to keep your perimeter covered. If a burglar trips a sensor, then the alarm receiver inside the home goes off. Backyard alarms are good early warning devices and can be used for anything from detecting humans, vehicles, and large animals.

Don't Neglect Your Backyard Security

backyard-security-tips-locksmith-services-longmont.jpg

Your backyard can be just as important as your front when it comes to your homes security. A study by airef shows that most offenders entered residences using some type of force and the two most most common methods of entry are by breaking a window or forcing a back door open.

Always keep the security of your backyard in mind when thinking of your homes security. Be smart and be safe.

Important Safety Tips For Your Home Garage

Garages can often be used for many different purposes besides just storing a car. Below are some helpful tips that can be used to make a residential garage safer.

Be Careful Storing Dangerous Chemicals

An important safety tip for keeping a garage safe is to store all the dangerous chemicals away from children and animals. Remember to hide or elevate any potentially hazardous liquids and materials such as gasoline, pesticides, fertilizers, paint thinners, bleaches, oils, etc.

Keep any propane tanks locked up and disconnected when not in use and make sure to store any flammable liquids away from open flames and hot spots.

Consider investing in some garage organizer bins to prevent tripping hazards and utilize garage ceiling space to keep things off the floor.

Keep Storage Areas Organized To Avoid Accidents

A great way to passively keep yourself and others safe in the garage is to install shelving and other adequate storage containers. By keeping the garage and the surrounding storage areas neat and organized it will help to reduce clutter, therefore lowering the possibility of tripping on something. Consider investing in a storage solution that will utilize the garage ceiling for storage space and keep the floor clear of anything that could be a tripping hazard.

Watch Out For Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Garages are common places for carbon monoxide buildups, which is hazardous to human health and potentially fatal if left unchecked. Carbon monoxide gas is completely odorless and invisible to the naked eye.

While in a closed garage, never leave a vehicle running or use power equipment with an internal combustion engine like portable generators or pressure washers. Carbon monoxide can also leech from a garage into a home and potentially cause other health and safety concerns. Consider installing a carbon monoxide alarm in the garage for increased peace of mind.

Be Aware Of Flammable Materials And Liquids

While this still might fall under the category of storing dangerous chemicals, it's still important to mention the hazards of flammable materials.

Don't store any items such as gasoline, paint thinner, or anything flammable near an ignition source such as a hot water heater or air conditioning unit.

Always make sure that the garage is properly ventilated so no harmful toxins can build up. Always keep a class B or C fire extinguisher somewhere in the garage where it can be easily accessed.

Make Sure The Garage Is Well Lit

Another safety tip for the garage is to always ensure that it is well lit— both inside and outside. Keeping the garage bright outside will help to scare off burglars, and keeping an inside light on will help prevent tripping hazards and might confuse potential intruders as to whether someone is home.

Make sure all light switches are easy to find, not covered or blocked, and in an easy to access location. Put switches for outside lights inside the garage so they can’t be used from outside. Consider investing in a utility shop light with a pull string to hang from the garage ceiling.

Keep The Garage Door Well Maintained

Since the sliding garage door itself is such a big entrance, it's important to make sure it closes securely and is in good condition.

A good practice is to walk around the interior and exterior of the garage door and make sure all the bolts and screws are tightened. Make sure to test any electric garage door openers if possible and regularly check the trip sensor to double check the door will stop closing if an obstruction is detected.

Consider investing in a garage door sensor that can send alerts when the garage door is left open.

Be Aware Of What’s In The Driveway

Did you know that each year more than 9000 children are treated in emergency rooms for injuries that occurred while they were unattended around motor vehicles? Safekids.org also advises parents to walk all the way around their parked car in the driveway to check for children before reversing or driving off.

Keep items like toys, bikes, chalk, and anything else that could attract children or thieves locked in the garage or a storage area instead of outside on the driveway.

Consider investing in a driveway motion alarm to receive notifications when movement is detected.

Make Sure All Garage Entryways Are Secure

An important part of keeping every garage safe is to always ensure that the doors and windows leading into the garage are sturdy enough to keep out burglars.

Install high security locks on all entrance doors and keep every window covered as to prevent potential burglars from peering inside.

Use keyless deadbolts to keep doors locked from the inside only at night and keep all overhead garage doors locked securely when at home.

Child And Pet Proof The Garage

According to the ASPCA there are many items commonly stored in garages that are hazardous and potentially fatal for young children and pets. Some of these garage dangers for children and pets include insecticides, veterinary products, household items, prescriptions, rodenticides, and garden products like herbicides and fungicides.

Keep garages safe by being aware of where items are stored, even for those that don't have a pet or a child. Be prepared for visitors and any worst case scenarios; always try to keep garage interiors as kid and animal friendly as possible.

Protect Vehicles From Theft Or Burglary

Keeping personal and work vehicles securely locked in a garage is a good way to keep burglars and other criminals away from the home. Vehicles that are left parked in the driveway, on the street, or in a parking lot are much more likely to be vandalized, broken into, or even stolen than those in a garage. The safest thing that can be done for a vehicle is to keep it secure in a garage with the keys tightly locked away in a separate room.

Those with a keyless entry system might consider keeping their car keys locked away securely overnight so thieves can't exploit the radio signals in the fob to remotely gain access to the vehicle.

Keep Garages Safe With These Important Garage Safety Tips

Every garage door is an important part of a homes perimeter, so keep it well maintained and it will function properly for a long time. Keep in mind the dangers that all items may pose to the health and safety of the occupants.

Differences Between A Lock Change And A Rekey

Whether it's moving into a new place, losing a key, or going through a change in ownership— getting a lock rekeyed can be a good idea for those worried about who has access to their property. In these instances our first instinct is to change the locks completely, but there are often cheaper and more practical options out there. In situations like these, a good first step is to call a locksmith in order to discuss possible options for the specific needs of your security. Locksmith Services Longmont provides mobile locksmith services for all local residents of North Colorado. Our technicians have experience handling all types of residential and commercial lock and key situations, whether it's changing a lock, rekeying, or even installing a new lock.

 What is a Lock Change?

Changing a lock is exactly how it sounds. When a lock is changed, it means taking out the old or broken lock and replacing it with a new and separate piece of lock hardware. Lock changes are often needed for various reasons including:

Different Styled Locks

Replacing Broken Locks

Higher Security Locks

Upgrading to Electronic Locks

Changing Locks to Match Other Brands

Replacing Old Locks

There are few similarities between changing a lock and rekeying one, but the biggest is that a new key will be utilized in both situations. When a new lock is installed or replaced, the lock hardware itself will be different as the old lock will no longer be there. Having a lock replaced is a painless process, but it can be more expensive than simply changing tumblers to match a new key for an existing lock.

There are many factors for deciding on which kind of lock to purchase for your home such as price, brand, security level, and lock style. Locksmith Services Longmont is capable of providing professional lock work since all of our technicians have the proper tools required to accurately and correctly change or rekey residential and commercial locks.

Much like residential locks, commercial locks can also be easily and affordably replaced for any business or office location. Locksmith Services Longmont offers skilled and informed technicians to come to the location of your business in order to remove old locks and replace them with newer locks more capable of fitting today's increased security needs. Our technicians are available to help residents of North Colorado when it comes to installing new locks, whether it's for increased security, an updated look, or any other reason.

What is Rekeying?

Rekeying a lock is different than changing it completely because rekeying a lock will not replace the current lock, instead it only changes the key that operates it. Rekeying can be done by any of our highly trained locksmith technicians. Rekeying is done when a lock is removed from the door so the tumblers or pins can be changed to match a new key. Once everything is changed to the new key, the lock is installed back into the door. Locksmiths from Locksmith Services Longmont are capable of coming to residential and commercial business sites in Northern Colorado to perform quick and affordable lock rekeying services. Our locksmiths are capable of making new locks work with other pre-existing locks and/or rekeying everything to something new and different entirely.

Read more about What is Lock Rekeying?

When rekeying a lock, it is best to already have the key that currently operates the lock on hand, however, don't panic if all working keys are lost. When a lock needs to be rekeyed but all keys are missing, calling a locksmith is a good idea. A locksmith will be able to arrive on site with extra keys and the ability to pick open the lock so that it may be rekeyed to new keys. In addition to providing you with a new set of keys, having your home or business rekeyed will also provide you with the peace of mind that no one else has access to your property; as any other keys will no longer work in the lock. Although rekeying a lock can sometimes be more cost effective, having a lock replaced can sometimes be more beneficial depending on the security situation of the home or business.

Pros of rekeying a business or home:

  • When handled professionally it can be a quick and easy process.

  • It can at times be more affordable than replacing the lock.

  • Deters old tenants from entering your property

  • If your keys are lost, you can save yourself from purchasing new locks.

  • Prevent former employees from accessing your business.

Differences Between Lock Changes and Rekeying Locks

There are many differences between changing the locks on a home or business versus having it rekeyed. The main difference between the two is that when you change a lock, you are changing your lock completely versus only changing the internal mechanisms of the lock. Changing a lock is great in situations where a lock is already damaged or you are worried about the integrity of your residential or commercial locks. When a lock is changed it can often be replaced with a newer and more secure lock style, this can offer increased protection against lock picking, key bumping, and forced entry attacks.

While rekeying can often be a most cost effective and quicker solution to keeping old tenants out, former employees, and ex partners out, it won't fix a lock that is already damaged or malfunctioning.  When rekeying a lock, the lock is uninstalled temporarily and taken apart to remove the old pins that are inside of the lock and in turn replaced with new pins specific to a new key, rendering the previous key unusable.

After the pins have been matched with the new key, the lock is then reinstalled and can no longer be unlocked using the old key. When rekeying, it is possible to get all the locks in your home or business rekeyed to the same key, as well as the option of having separate keys for separate individual locks.

Locksmith Services Longmont offers professional and dedicated lock and key technicians who are available to come to your home or business 24/7 for any locksmithing needs. Our lock technicians are capable of rekeying locks, changing locks, replacing old locks, and installing new locks completely. Local residents of North Colorado can contact one of our friendly technicians for assistance or information on rekeying and lock changing for their residential or commercial properties. Our locksmiths have experience working on all name brands such as: Schlage, Kwikset, Baldwin, Emtek, Defiant, Yale, Arrow, and more!

Tips For Installing Outdoor Home Security Cameras

Nowadays, it's actually very easy to install a home security system without the need of an electrician or handyman. Here are some of the best places to install outdoor home security cameras in order to get the best results. The FBI reports that personal property valued at more than $12 billion was reported stolen from homes in 2015 alone. Consider checking with the local crime map and staying updated on any local events.

Be Aware of the First Floor

According to the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors, or interNACHI, a reported 81% of burglars enter through the first floor. The same report also suggests that only about 2% of burglars enter anywhere on the second floor. When installing a home security camera, it’s quite crucial to have the entire ground floor surveilled – inside and outside the home. Ensure that all entry door locks are highly secure and locked when the home is vacant.

Cover Ground Floor Windows and Doors

Since most burglars and home invaders enter through the first floor, it's best to add deterrents for that level. By installing a security camera on the inside and outside of a residential home, homeowners will be able to monitor all unauthorized points of entry.

Keep Security Cameras in High Locations

Make sure that all exterior home security cameras are installed where they can't be easily accessed. By installing cameras in a high location, they will be kept safe from vandalism and destruction from thieves and other criminals. Keep security cameras high to avoid unwanted entities from tampering with or stealing the cameras themselves. When installing an outdoor home security camera, try to install it at least 9 feet above the ground.

Place Security Cameras Someplace Visible

Keeping all residential home security cameras visible is a great way to deter burglars from attempting to break in. By keeping the security cameras visible, they can act as powerful visual deterrents that remind criminals they are being watched and recorded. When placing security cameras, make sure they won’t be blocked by items such as trees, vehicles, and other foreign objects.

Make Sure They Are Waterproof

Only invest in outdoor home security cameras that are absolutely waterproof. Don't use indoor cameras in outdoor situations as they aren't weatherproof and will most likely stop working when it rains. Those who choose not to purchase an outdoor camera can install an indoor camera facing outside through a window. Another simple and cheap alternative is to re-purpose an old smartphone with a motion sensing and recording app to act as an indoor camera facing outwards.

Make sure to invest in a camera that is suitable for the weather conditions in which you plan to use it. Always check the security camera’s operational temperatures and waterproof capabilities before investing in outdoor cameras. A good outdoor waterproof security camera is the Blink XT. The Blink XT is a security camera that is capable of motion detection, HD video recording, and cloud storage.

Use Outdoor Cameras as Intended

When purchasing a security camera always make sure to look at the different focus ranges available. A security camera with a small focus of around 45 - 75 degrees should be aimed at a particular location. Larger viewing angles will allow for broader and much wider views. Make sure the area in front of the camera is unobstructed so there’s a clear line of sight. Remember to have a goal in mind before purchasing a new security camera.  Consider keeping any street access covered with a camera as recording a license plate may be helpful. If the security camera’s recordings are to be used as legal evidence, make sure that timestamps are enabled. If a recording is to be used against a criminal, it’s very important that the video recording displays the date and time.

When selecting an outdoor camera for a residential property, consider investing in a high quality resolution like 1080p vs 720p. A higher resolution will provide crisper and cleaner images that are less blurry than low resolution recordings.

Understand the advantages and disadvantages to both wired and wireless security cameras. Remember to select a security camera that offers quick cloud backups in case an intruder decides to steal the security camera video hard drive.

Invest in Night Vision Security Cameras

It is always a good idea to invest in an outdoor security camera that is capable of night vision. Nowadays there are many different outdoor home security cameras that are equipped with infrared night vision. Night vision will eliminate the cover of darkness and take away any element of safety and security that a burglar might feel when surrounded in darkness. With night vision cameras, homeowners are always able to record and watch their surroundings, day or night. For those who don’t want to invest in a security camera that is capable of night vision, they can opt to use a motion-sensing floodlight to assist with camera recordings.

The most common types of night vision cameras are infrared (IR) cameras. They use LED bulbs to flood the area with infrared light that is invisible to the human eye but can still be picked up by the security camera.

Install a Door Viewer or Video Doorbell

As we mentioned earlier most burglars enter through the first floor, while about 34% of burglars enter through the front door. Consider investing in a video doorbell or a door viewing device that allows a homeowner to record any motion detected at their door. Video doorbells are great for increasing residential home security, and they look nice too. Not only can residents use them to see their visitors, but they can also use their phone to talk through the device, or even set it to automatically record any movements at their front door.

A video doorbell can help give the illusion that someone is home, even if no one is. When the button is pressed or movement is detected through a video doorbell, it will trigger an alert on the paired mobile phone app. When an alert is triggered, the homeowner can choose to answer and respond, or simply ignore the doorbell completely. Video doorbells might also influence delivery drivers to be more gentle with packages.

Keep the Backyard Covered

According to statistics, about 22% of burglars enter through the back door. Make sure all security cameras around the home are highly visible and positioned correctly.  We recommend that you keep the backyard and backdoor completely and thoroughly surveilled. Security cameras are good for keeping unwelcome guests out of any backyard, but they only help if they are seen. It also helps to place "No Trespassing" signs and video monitoring warning stickers around the perimeter of the home. Remember to never leave ladders loose in the backyard as they might be used by criminals to gain entry into an upstairs window.

Protect Ground Floor Windows Facing the Street

A ground floor window facing the street is a prime target for burglars. Not only is glass typically much easier to break than a wooden or metal door, it allows burglars to easily see  into the home. Keep ground floor blinds closed at night to block off view of any valuables and possessions. There are many different burglar deterrent tricks that can be used to protect ground floor windows such as placing real or fake security cameras, warning signs, and even planting bushes or shrubs.

Best Locations For Outdoor Home Security Cameras

When it comes to the safety of a residential home, remember that more than 80% of burglars enter through the first floor. Place outdoor security cameras in locations that are easily visible, high off the ground, and protective of the ground floor areas. It’s important to always do the proper research before investing in an outdoor home security camera.

Best Residential Camera Locations:

  • Covering the Front Door

  • Covering the Back Door

  • Watching First Floor Windows

  • Near Automatic Garage Doors

  • Over Any Basement Entrances

Planning and preparation is everything when it comes to implementing a good home security camera setup. Remember that it’s also possible to use fake security cameras in addition to real ones in order to make a home look very secure.
